CAMBRIDGE, Mass, Feb. 11, 1992 -- Lotus Development Corp. announced it has
begun shipping new network server software that supports access to a wide
variety of CD-ROM (compact disc - read only memory) applications on major
network operating systems, including Novell, 3COM, Banyan, IBM and other
NetBIOS-compatible operating systems. CD/Networker 4.0 allows
organizations using CD-ROM applications developed by other vendors to take
advantage of the network technology developed by Lotus One Source and
gives organizations the ability to access CD-ROM applications from
multiple vendors across a local or wide-area network.
Using performance enhancement techniques developed by Lotus, a single
CD-ROM server can provide large groups of network users access to multiple
CD-ROMs at better than stand-alone PC performance. Multiple CD servers can
be installed to provide optimal performance and accessibility for larger
organizations. The power and flexibility of the server reduces the volume
of equipment necessary to meet the organization's application needs by
making it unnecessary to equip each desktop with a reader and discs.
Earlier versions of CD/Networker supported users of Lotus' One Source
family of CD-ROM applications, including CD/Banking, CD/Investment,
CD/Corporate and CD/Insurance.
Ken Grunzweig, vice president of Lotus One Source, said, "Most large
organizations using CD-ROM products on networks need access to a variety
of information sources. Our network software has brought extraordinary
productivity gains to Lotus One Source customers. The network expertise
that we have developed during the past five years will enable us to add
significant value for a broad range of customers who are seeking to
maximize their investment in CD-ROM technology."
CD/Networker consists of several components: CD-ROM server software,
workstation software and administrative software. The key component of
CD/Networker is the CD-ROM server software. The CD-ROM server provides
multiple users simultaneous access to as many as 84 CD-ROM readers.
CD/Networker workstation software consists of a small, unloadable TSR
(terminate-and-stay-resident) program. Once the software is loaded users
can access CD-ROM drives as any other drive on the network. CD/Networker's
administration capabilities allow access to CD-ROMs and CD servers via
familiar network operating system commands. Availability and Pricing
CD/Networker is available immediately, directly from Lotus. Pricing varies
by configuration. Organizations seeking further information should call
